hey can anyone tell me the effect chloride ions and sulfate ions have on objects in sea water,,,,but not after they are recovered, while their in the water?? thanx people.....
i would like to think that all they do is so that they super saturate the artefact... hence making it more vulnerable once salvaged... maybe also the precipitation (deposits) can occur if certain ions are present...
the present of ions definitely speed up the corrosion process...
Ions in water speed up corrosion significantly. Hence why iron structures near the sea corrode much more rapidly then similar structures say near the Murray River.
