Hi all!

I have a question about internal ranks in school and the school ranking in the state.

I've read posts where students from schools ranking 100+ have been getting 60 - 70% in their subjects and still getting into the top 10 ranks, and other people telling them that their internal school ranks matter greatly to their overall HSC mark/ATAR.

I'm currently at a school ranking in the top 50 and getting between 70 - 95% in my subjects but my ranks are really kind of in the middle - highish in my subjects. How will this affect my HSC marks/ATAR compared to somebody at a lower ranked school but doing well in terms of ranks at their school with poorer marks than mine? I've only just finished my first set of assessment tasks so I do have time to improve, but this is just a question that's been on my mind for a while.

Thanks!

It's all relative. Your internal marks will be moderated based on the strength of your cohort and your rank in it as determined by the external exams, and likewise for someone attending another school. So theoretically there should be no disadvantage/advantage at all. To look at the process in more detail, I recommend the stickies at the top of this section - they are very comprehensive and informative.
