no state government's should not be abolished

provision of public services is done far more efficiently at a state rather than federal level

transfering all of they country's buerecrats to canberra will not improve things, it will make things worse

in my opinion the states should have more powers, they should completely control communications, health, education, transport, aged care, tourism, energy, environment and fisheries, forestry and agriculture

in return the commonwealth should have more powers over tax/government spending, complete control over industrial relations and stuff like that

I'm calling for better regional representation... at the moment the states don't accurately represent their entire region if we separated people into perhaps (rural, city) etc there would be better representation.

State governments should be abolished.

Currently state and federal responsiblities overlap causing in-efficiency and allowing for buck-passing.

In place of the current system:

States should be abolished, all state responsiblities would be passed to the federal government. The federal government would own all state and council assets and infrastructure.

Australia would be divided into areas between states and councils in size super-councils if you will. For instance a greater sydney council would take in the sydney basin two more councils either side of sydney would control the remainder of the NSW east coast.

These would be administrative regions, the adminstration within this region would be undertaken by a beaurocracy - at each administrative areas head would be a board of directors representing various divisions of governmnet services within the area eg health, policing, public transport. This board would be headed by a CEO supported by a co-ordinating department (in charge of co-ordination between branches within the administraive area, co-ordination with other administraive areas and co-ordination with higher echolons).

Laws would be standardised nationally however execution of them done by area, in the case of crime and the justice system for example: the Director of policing (sitting on the board of directors) would be the chief of policing for the administrative area and as such a uniformed policeman. The jutice system would have two tiers in each administrative area a local one for each town within the area and a central court for the area from here appeals can go to the Federal Court of Appeals and Finally the Supreme Court of Australia.

The Health director would co-ordinate all areas of the health system within their administrative area and would have responsiblity personally for the health system under their control.

The education system would have a nationally standard syllabus and like policing be re-ordered administratively by the new administrative areas.

Planning laws would be set via national guidelines interpretted by each administrative area and subject to appeal above the adminstrative area.

All tax would be paid federally and would then be distributed from their back to adminstrative areas.

Parliament would also need drastic reform to prevent a concentration of power and preserve 'checks and balances'. For instance each administrative area would elect 7 house of reps MPs and 5 senators. Elections would also be changed eg in year X 3 of the MPs are up for election and 3 of the senators in each administrative area, 2 years later 4 of the MPs and 2 of the Senators. MP's are elected by a preferential system and Senators by a proportional one.

Supreme court justices would be nominated by cabinet however would have to be approved by the senate - in addition to serving as justices they would sit in the senate as senators.

Note: Above system is a work in progress - feel free to make sensible suggestions for improvement. Also I would not expect it to be implemented overnight but rather over mnay years.

Sounds stupid to me. Society relies on the checks and balances of the division of powers and the separation of powers. If the Federal Government ran everything, then the poor would have been sold into slavery of the rich long ago.

less red tape, less loss of funds, seriously : each level of government wastes heaps of OUR money, most of which goes to giant companys that carry out government policies and plans by administration (like hiring workers "casually" - the workers do the work but the 2nd and third man in the line get most of the money! thats weird)

less red tape the better- but please dont abolish the state gov. it just needs improvement, thats all

maintain the states I say, as their abolishment would prevent us from being New South Welshmen, which makes us far superior to other Australians.

I accept that the changes that I propose are nothing short of revolutionary in nature and highly unlikley to ever occur - I just think that it is a better system than the one we have.
