hey all!

I'm dying for some help! For my next assessment task- a 'research task'- I have to research info about the Tet Offensive (Under the topic of Indochina) and then do an in class essay.

The stupid thing is- we haven't even begun the topic in class yet! Assessment date- 1st July!
So I urgently need help!

The question is-

Evaluate the significance of the Tet Offensive in the success of communism in Vietnam between 1968 and 1979.
In your answer you must consider the impact both in Vietnam/Indochina and the U.S.

If anyone has notes or an essay on this topic- please email me!

thanks!

Well, just to help you get started, Tet was really the turning point in the war. It had a major impact on the American homefront (pictures and media reports from tet played a large role in changing public opinion- the US public began to want their troops out of there).

I did indochina last term so I can't remember a ton, but if you reasearch on the net, look in books like the HTA Study Guide, Conflict in Indochina by Ian Sutherland, the Excel book (it's not that great though) and research on the net you will be able to answer this question.

yeah concentrate mainly on the effect it had on the homefront through all the media images that were broadcast during it. but there were other factors as well- it showed the US that the viet forces weren't just a rag tag group, they actualy had some numbers and were able to co ordinate themselves on a large scale.

a good way to get marks- say how the tet offensive was basically a microcosm of the war itself. although the US won the actual physical battle, the vietnamese were still essentially the overall victors due to the pyschological blow they inflicted on the US army and the US public

rememeber that the question is asking about indochina, not just vietnam. when we did this last year, we were expected to talk and Cambodia and Laos. I don't really remember what i wrote, but in the long term, because of the Tet offensive, the US pulled troops out of vietnam and started bombing instead, forcing viet cong into cambodia. US bombed cambodian boarder, but the cambodian gov (?) didn;t do anything about it, which led to the Kamer Rouge taking power...(i have no idea how correct that is but, the point is, talk about all indochina)
