i have a mathomat (those mats with shapes and stuff) and on it there are sine and cos graphs, but the pi are like 1 cm and 2 cm apart.

my teacher said it should around 3 cm apart which i know is true

is it still okay to use these curves using normal 1cm grids

or do i have to change the units in the x axis?

I would just do it freehand. It's not that hard with a bit of practice. The scale will usually be something weird if asked in an exam, remember to make it pretty big and clear and you'll be ok.

just to add to that in the hsc if you do do sketching it will be on normal lined paper (well, it'll be around a cm per line spacing) ... and clear half-page sketches are preferable ...

i've lived thru high school without a stencil...so it's a luxury item if you've got one but it's not necessary, it's better to learn to live without one...

its just a template so you can trace circles, curves and stuff

you can get flexi curves too which are pretty neat

my teacher hates free hand stuff, he said its not accurate

I got a flexi curve...for chemisty graphs :D.

Like spice girl, I managed somehow to survive high school without a template. I even draw my circles freehand, they're not bad either if I say so myself.

As for accuracy, I think your teacher is fussing a little - how can you possibly be *that* accurate with the equipment at hand? Does he want 3 significant figures?? Obviously you'll have to humour him but as Pri said, in the HSC all you need is a clear half page diagram. Most people I know just use a ruler for the scale and do the rest freehand. The person who topped 4U from my school was one of these.
