Something strange happened yesterday - I turned my comp on and tried opening Firefox, but got this window where I had to choose a 'profile' (I think, I can't remember what it was called!).

'default' which was the only one avaliable didn't work because it said that 'it was already in use' or something along those lines, so I made another profile and clicked ok. I thought it had worked for a minute before I realised all my bookmarks were gone and my themes and extentions. :(

Basically, I have no idea how to get back to 'default'. Can anyone help me out with this?

it's a standard feature, been with firefox ever since it came out
it mainly pops up when there is a major error in the profiles or some of the settings were corrupted, eg a sudden "end task" of firefox

your bookmarks should still be in your computer

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR COMPUTER USER NAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\mg9upm4k.default\bookmarks.html

all firefox bookmarks are stored in a single bookmarks.html file
the "mg9upm4k.default" <--- name is randomly generated so it might be different for your computer

the "Application Data" folder is hidden you might have to change your folder settings to see it

Or you can re-install if even that doesn't work

This can happen if firefox closes suddenly and the process is still running. When you go to start it back up, the default profile is already in use because the original process still has control over it.

Killing the process should do the trick, or if you start firefox in 'safe mode' from Start > Programs > .. et cetera.
yeah, thats right.

to kill the process:

<crtl-alt-delete>
task manager
processes
look for firefox
end process
