Social context is usually the circumstances under which a composer is living when they produce a certain piece. Ie, Stoppard's "social context" was the post-WWII absurdist world that influenced/inspired him to join the genre of Theatre of the Absurd to write his plays (Real Inspector Hound, Ros and Guil are Dead, etc.).
