kinda scary. Topics are pretty diverse. Done pretty well on the prelims, but year 12 seems like a massive dive into the deep.

There's so much content. But I feel like it should be fine with consolidation.

My son has just completed the first run of Software Engineering program for Year 11 and Year 12. It was gruelling at times. The teacher had no idea what he as doing day by day, week by week. There wasn't even a text book. The HSC trial exam was on paper. The HSC final exam however was in a computer setting with limited practice in this format prior. How could that even BE fair?

My son got through it. He scored outstandingly well with the internals but the final HSC exam was truly a challenge especially with a 3 hr Business Study exam in the morning. Did it build his skillset in resilience and being persistent. ABSOLUTELY. Did he work out that the journey was NOT up to the teacher but actually up to him creating solutions to learn the syllabus. ABSOLUTELY. It was a learning journey in him BECOMING more of himself for it showcased that this type of event may occur at Uni or in a career setting.

It paid off. He got through it. I managed to find an outstanding tutor who actually created his own learning platform with the entire SE syllabus streamlined onto it as a learning setup. This guy was a God SENT ANGEL. He effortlessly supported my son through his meltdowns and mine too. While my son, had limited knowledge in coding he still got through the whole process. If you have interest in coding then love on it. It will streamline the content and build your confidence.

I am sure there are so many SE teachers now who know what to teacher after this initial phase. They know what to expect. I am sure the exam will be easier this year as the first lot got through this program educating the HSC system that they did not cater to those who are not all computer geniuses.

At the end of the day, you will make it work. Just focus on a project with the Year 12 main work that ignites your passion. Fortunately, there was breathing room with the major work and the teacher allowed the class to create gaming platforms and not just projects around something being useful. You can always ask your teacher for room with this. If the teacher is disengaged with the class which in my son's circumstance was the case leading to everyone gaming and mucking around in class time. Of course, the naturally gifted thrived in this setting as they were confident with how easy the syllabus came to them. I advise that you are always working on learning the syllabus points, creating a study booklet for yourself with what you know you are NOT understanding and then asking these "geniuses" for more explanation. My son discovered they knew more than the teacher!

At least my son KNOWS that SE is not for him through this HSC journey. You will be learning content belonging to Year 1/2 and even Year 3 SE UNI subjects. Is it manageable - yes but you have to be self-sufficient and have curiosity to learn OUTSIDE the class environment. I still believe this experience and the knowledge he gained will support him in the future. You will learn so much in this field and truly gather if it's for Uni exploration or not.

Wish you all the very best.
I am rooting for your success.
Be Bold.
Be Brave.

Hi I did my hsc in 2025 and got a 94. Just a few tips i have for this subject:
first of all, prelims do not matter. Im sure you might have heard this but year 11 and year 12 are completely separate. Just because you did bad doesn't mean you can't band 6. One year is plenty to improve as long as you put consistent effort in.

1. Make sure you truly understand the content rather than just learning/memorising. It makes it A LOT easier to answer questions when you understand what the content is actually about. I would suggest taking the time to absorb the content and really getting familiar with it.

2. Do MOST of the major project yourself. Your teacher can definitely tell if you use AI so my advice would be to start creating the project yourself, only using AI to help you fix bugs and plan out what to code. Use it more like a teacher rather than having it code the whole website.

3. You dont need to be a coding genius, just make sure you practice as it was quite a big chunk of the HSC. If you master the theory content you can get a band 6 with just knowing the basics very well . The way to get good at coding is just practicing.

If you feel like you need more personalised help i currently tutor to subject to hsc 2026 students and i can fit in a few more students. I am currently a first year at UNSW pursuing a bachelor of computer science and commerce and i have previous tutoring experience so feel free to reach out.

Best of luck, you got this!
