Hey, can anyone please help me out with these few dot points, they are relating to a book review we need to do that will be placed in Spectrum (Sydney Morning Herald):

* recognize and discuss the effects of significant langauge features and conventions and how they contribute to meaning.

* make inferences from transectional and literary texts.

* draw conclusions about the power of the media to reflect and reinforce particular ideas, beliefs, attitudes and values.

* reflect on ideas and experiences gained from wide and in-depth reading. (how do you integrate that in a book review :s)

Any help would be great! :)
Thanks!

This is my interpretation:
*be able to identify different style of language and conventions and how they change how a text is read.
*essentially reading between the lines and picking up the subtext in texts.
*come up with your own ideas about the media's ability to portray the social values, beliefs and ideas of populace and express them.
*talk meaningfully about how a range of other material influenced your opinions/relates to what you are saying.
Hope this helps:)
BTW which HSC module is this for? Or is this prelim still?

thanks for that!

Yeah, last assignment for prelim. Looking forward to starting the HSC soon! (I actually dropped and then "undropped" the subject :D)

Do you think my opening makes sense in relation to the context (book review),

"Leading a dull and repetitive life, Ed, narrates Mark Zusak’s powerful and unique novel, The Messenger. Have you ever felt futile, or as a pawn amid a sea of knights? Everyone has felt down at a stage; and that is how, as a reader, you will see yourself in the shoes of the narrator. Original and fresh, the layout of the novel is very unique. It is divided into five parts, in the following order: Diamonds, Clubs, Spades, Hearts and The Joker."

Sounds okay?

Assignment is due wednesday... and i've only done 540 words - feeling pressure.

"Leading a dull and repetitive life, Ed, a teenager trying to find his way in life, narrates Mark Zusak’s powerful and unique novel, The Messenger. Hmm, it sounds ok but I would fiddle with your opening sentence slightly as it feels slightly disorganised. It also feels like you need a more appropriate start to your following sentence from the rhetorical question since the way its phrased doesn't link it in properly as the answer. Its well on its way though.:)

cool! Thanks :)

changed it somewhat:

"Leading a dull and repetitive life, Ed narrates Mark Zusak’s powerful and unique novel, The Messenger. His writing style is gripping to say the least; the words are flawlessly weaved together to deliver an elegant flow to this magnificent literary text. Original and fresh, the layout of the novel is very unique. It is divided into five parts, in the following order: Diamonds, Clubs, Spades, Hearts and The Joker."

sounds better? :D
