I have an Asus M51VA, with vista ultimate, and something is wrong with it.

After it starts up, loads the desktop and the stuff in the system tray, it freezes and the screen goes weird, looks like a whole bunch of static gibberish. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesnt work, so i have to hold down the power button to turn it off.
This happened about 4 times in a row when i tried to start it up, so then i tried starting in safe mode, nothing happened (didnt freeze), the help menu with the 'safe mode' article automatically opens up, so i read thru, and i found an interesting thing called 'system restore', that restores the system up to a certain previous date. It says that there was an automatic restore point created on 31-12-08 (makes sense..) and another restore point on 01-01-09, because i apparantly downloaded some direct x software. Im pretty sure i didnt, since i already have DX10, maybe it automatically downloaded, dont know. Also ive heard from a friend that vista's latest update is bad, screws up the computer, and i havnt seen windows update running lately, but it normally updates automatically and asks me if it wants to install the update. I havnt been asked anything from that in about a month or so, so as far as i know, i dont have the latest update.

My laptop was working perfectly fine until this morning (around 11.00am), i was using it last nite till about 12.30am (10-01-09) using msn, and this morning it decided to screw up.

Does someone know how to fix this? Will system restore fix this, because as far as i know, i havnt downloaded or installed any virusses lately and it was working perfectly fine 11 hrs before it screwd up.
I still have my reboot cd's that came with my laptop, im sure i'd have to wipe it clean and fix with that as a last resort, which i wouldnt mind doing since ive backed up everything important, but it'd still be nice to fix this without wiping the hdd.

try system restore

if that doesnt work i'd boot in safe mode and fiddle around in there. run some virus scans and such and save anything you desperately dont want to lose onto an external hard disk

then if the problem keeps happening reformat your computer. perhaps install XP first and see if that works, then reformat again and try your Vista. perhaps vista is the problem.
