Movies @ Macquarie - Fact or Fiction?
April 13, 2004

Sometimes movies can seem so real - but just how much is fact and how much fiction?

Macquarie University will be a haven for movie buffs in the coming months as the 2004 season of Movies @ Macquarie kicks off with free screenings of blockbuster Hollywood movies.

Now in its fourth year, Movies @ Macquarie - Fact or Fiction? is an innovative concept that allows members of the community to watch screenings of popular movies and television programs, and then participate in a question and answer session hosted by Macquarie experts.

Movies @ Macquarie this year features seven screenings, starting with the romantic comedy Emma, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Toni Collette. Based on the Jane Austen novel, Emma tells the story of a young woman in England who plays her towns matchmaker. When attempting to match up a friend, Emma runs into complications which set off a chain reaction of misunderstandings and mistaken intentions of love. As she attempts to set things straight, Emma learns a few things about herself, the most important of which is realising who it is that she herself truly loves.

The screening will be followed by a discussion forum hosted by Emeritus Professor Yasmine Gooneratne of the Department of English, who is also patron of the Jane Austen Society of Australia.

Says Gooneratne, While Jane Austen resembles Shakespeare in being representative of high literary art, she is closer to our own times, and much more accessible in terms of language. Not only is her sense of the comic as acute as Shakespeare's, but her appeal to women and young girls is much stronger - her women are lively, determined rebels who manage to tread the fine line between social conformity and private integrity, and represent positive feminine values.

Emma will screen at the Macquarie Theatre, Macquarie University on Sunday, April 18
at 7pm.

Bookings are not required, and drinks and snacks will be on sale in the foyer. Parking fees apply.
