When writing an essay for Modern History, how do you tend to make references to historians? Normally do you quote them directly, or do you tend to paraphrase?

i.e.

Overy states that "___________" which means ________

or

Overy suggests that the Treaty of Versailles evoked deep-seated feelings of nationalism in Germany...

i would tend to paraphrase, as this would tell the marker that you understand what your saying, not just name dopping for the sake of it. I think Ken Webb supports this idea, and he's the modern history guru.
