any advice on studying for Russia?

Yeah just make notes on each sorta area of Russia. Like revolution 1917, Nep era, collectivisation etc. Get an essay question for each 'era' that ive been talking about and write up a prepared essay. you'd be suprised how much it sinks in. Also it is easy to spot errors in the textbooks if you use several for the same topic area!!
