Explain why it is that the vertical and horizontal components of a projectile's motion are independent of each other.

They are perpendicular to eachother. Perpendiuclar components of motion are independent of eachother.

You cannot influence the motion of an object in the desired direction by applying a component of motion perpendicular to the desired direction.

Eg, you cannot open a door by lifting it up.
You cannot throw a ball to a person to the left of you by throwing it straight up in the air.
