hey guys,

just confused about one thing.

ok. stomates are sites of gas exchange and water evaporation right? How does the stomate compromise between allowing gas exchange for photosynthesis (at daytime) and not letting too much water evaporate? And are they found only on the underside of leaves? why?

what times of the day does the stomata open and at what times does it close?

They are on the underside because there is no direct sunlight there, and as such it is cooler, hence lower evapouration.

You'll find that a lot of plants open their stomates at the cooler times of day, and then close them as it approaches midday, because it is hotter then and therefore a higher chance of evapouration.

The guard cell controls opening and closing, when there is abundant water in stomates it becomes turgid and opens, allowing for evaporation. When there is less water in guard cells it becomes flacid and decreases amount of water evaporation. Water movement in stomates occurs through osmosis because potassium and chlorine ions move in or out of guard cells depending on whether water must be removed or conserved
