Let's just say I wanted to do Graphic Design as a course at a Private College, or even at Uni for that matter : do I need to be able to do free-hand sketches? If you think about it - most Graphic Design courses are completed using Computer Packages etc.!

u really think I'd need to be able to sketch?! damn!

by the way ... I was searching the UAC site and from I can only see one university that actually runs a course called B Graphic Design ... there are heaps of Design/Arts courses but Canberra Uni is the only one with Graphic Design, that can't be right, can it ?!?!?!

nah i don't have any kind of portfolio whatsoever ! :( I only recently realised that this is what I wanna do - and that I don't like the course I'm doin at UTS! But if I apply next year - then most institutions will take me on the basis of my UAI (I hope!)

yes, drawing skills are a plus - they really help with conceptualising your ideas. in first year i was an art major, graphics minor - and did studies in painting/drawing and life drawing - it really helped. Now i've switched to a Graphic design major. usually a viscomm course will cover fundamentals in drawing in the first year, so don't worry too much.

i didn't have to present my portfolio, as i had done HSC art. (here the prereq is either hsc visual arts OR portfolio & interview, both if quotas on student numbers need to be applied.)

a lot of the main design is carried out on computer but all the concept sketches must be mapped out and done by hand. you include these in your process diaries, which are always assessed. having said that, you don't need to be excellent at drawing (that comes with practice) but if you can show your creativity/good conceptual thinking, and if you have good colour and spatial sense, well that is more important in graphic design.

Drawing is only really important if you want to become an illustrator.

Thanx for the advice guys ... yeah I found some courses like B Visual Communication and B Design at UTS/UWS and at several Private Colleges.

Hey Chookyn: your doing a Graphic Design major? how is it? is it what you expected it would be? and I'm guessing your doing it at uni and not at a college ... do u get enough 'hands-on' experience by doing it at a uni?

OMG thanx Natstar, that's exactly what I wanted to know! :) I've been doing some research and those are the 2 colleges that came up (KVB and Billy Blue), as well as Sydney Graphics College!

yeah, i am. actually i'm at a private college (which is currently applying to be recognised as a university). It's spread across arts, science, nursing, theology, business - not a specialist graphics place. But our design facilities are pretty good. One of my lecturers checked out COFA's facilities a few weeks back and said we have a better funded graphics department, more G5s and tonnes more creative space. All final year design students here get to design for actual clients in final year, whereas (if i understood my lecturer correctly) only a select few of COFA students get that opportunity as a part of their course.

i love it.. visual communication is everything i wanted in a degree. research and conceptualising can be a pain though, but designing is fun. there is plenty of hands-on experience, that's pretty much all we seem to do. I only have practical (and some theory) assignments, no exams (at least for this sem anyway). :)
