This is an interesting idea jm.

After seeing this thread, I've got a suggestion. I thought about it while returning from my recent BOS/Internet hiatus.

When I came back to view "new threads" or recent threads which have recent posts, I had about 50 pages of threads to go through, from various forum sections and subjects.

This has nothing to do with "threads per page" or even "posts per page" (the user-view options, available in user cp, edit options).

It doesn't have anything to do with "subscribed threads" but it has some similar aspects to "subscribed forums"

My suggestion, albeit seemingly impossible (although not impossible for tactic? :D), is as follows:

"Is there any way of filtering forum sections based on a predefined set of user-options?"

To explain a little more:

I'm only interested in forums X, Y and Z.

When I click on "new threads", I do not want to be able to view forums such as A, B and C, as they bare no relevance to my studies. Although this seems 'slack' by not even viewing threads in subject forums such as Biology, Latin, Music and Visual Arts, it would make more sense from an end-user's point of view to be able to selectively decide which forums he/she wishes to view.

That is, to tailor-make forum views for each particular individual and his/her subjects.

Does this sound impossible or is it not feasible based on BOS's site statistics/hits/server load?

This is only a suggestion mind you and it wouldn't be the end of the world if it weren't implemented (I do understand that it is a huge task to undertake, if it were to be implemented).

Thanks in advance :)

No, that's what someone else suggested a while ago, some sort of Java based chat (ie IRC-wannabe). Then someone else asked about the BOS IRC channel on Austnet (#hsc I believe, although I see fatmuscle/tactic there from time to time).

Porting MSN has already been achieved, but that's not what I was talking about ;)

my suggestions are:
1. have a page n00bs go when they 1st register to find out about avatars, user cp, and other things, for e.g. some of the things i dont know (like what's the little page next to the date on each post?) - i.e. unless there is one i havent seen

User CP,
Edit Options

Under "Thread View Options"
Default Posts Per Thread

Set it to whatever you want,

5 posts per page, 10, 20, 30 or 40.

40 would be optimal, since you wouldn't have too many pages to go through, if it were a long thread :)

I have mine on forum default though :)

Rahul's method works too.

yeah but if you change it the page takes longer to load, defeats the purpose

i thought of another suggestion

for example, in the english forum there's a thread with questions on say, the king lear module. well it's annoying to go through a whole thread to find some questions, so i am wondering if the moderators of forums could run a board where they add questions people suggest.

this could be done via stickies, which are closed and only opened when the mod adds things. or it could be done on a separate page that visitors go to especially for questions (because otherwise there will be too many stickies, imagine a sticky for each of the modules)

just a suggestion

A discussion forum, maybe? It is just that most discussions in the non-school section are cut short by stupid comments, yet nothing is done to stop that as there is little point in doing so when people don't seem to care.

oh yeah, like where you can't go off topic? that could be good, besides the fast that that's the whole point of this place, and of the non school section
