OK, so I'm attempting to make notes but I'm having trouble with this dot-point:

Explain that artefacts from long submerged wrecks will be saturated with dissolved chlorides and sulfates.

All the text books identify this but don't really explain it. Explaining means providing a why/how, but the text books don't really give that. The closest I've got to an explanation is:

"porous objects are soaked in seawater rich in chloride and sulfate salts"

which gives an explanation but it's incredibly brief. So, anyone got any ideas?

wooden artefacts are usually leached out and replaced by salty solutions that eventually fill the spaces between cellulose and lignin fibres. when artefcats are brought to the surface they are kept wet in seawater to prevent the destruction that occurs when they dry out (because as you may already know when a salt artefact is allowed to dry out, the salt crystals expand and cause weakening and distortion of the artefact)
