well...

atm i'm learning all the basic techniques there are and their definition..

but what struck me is their effect...

say for example u spotted alltieration and was asked to explain the effect of this technique...what would the effect be

so i'm asking whats the effect of alliteration, assonace and rhyme/rhythm

alliteration- to exaggerate what is being said
assonace- see above
rhyme- usually to put a lighter tone on something, make it less serious, it can also be done in order to satirize (mock/critisize) something

Assonance - see 'English Techniques' + in most cases it slows down the reading, emphasising a point or calming the action

and what's the effect of irony? or a pun?

irony's often used for humour, ditto puns.

puns or wordplay can add a sense of irreverence or sometimes sarcasm. if i could think of an example.... but i can't.

irony can be sarcastic or cynical if used correctly.
and it can be a good form of contrast of 'something unknown' with 'something known' - if you can identify the tone as being ironic, you can generally understand the author's gist. blah.

thats similiar to hyperbole isn't it?

no a hyperbole is when something is exagreated, e.g "this book ways a ton" etc

if u ask me every technique emphazies something

yes, hyperbole is when there is overstating its importance...but the reason why is to emphasise the significance of something, or de-emphasise through understatement

yeah but to me every technique has the point of emphazing something for exmaple in Wilfred Owens poems he used Onomatopei to emphazie the sounds of battle
he use Reptition of "Gas! GAS!" to emphazie danger

by the end of my exams im gona hate the word emphazie maybe i should look up another meaning in a thesaurus hehe
