Can you get by just by buying the essential texts and some of the recommended texts?

It really depends on the subject. Sometimes textbooks are found at the library so you can just photocopy relevant sections. Its best to ask your lecturer if you really need to buy certain books. But its always better to buy the books, you will find it easier to understand the work.

I've gotten by just using the readers - but the recommended texts are usually good references for assignments, obviously. Majority of these books you can find in the library. I wouldn't just on the bandwagon until you know that you really need the textbook, otherwise you'll end up with a pile of textbooks you don't really use or need (hence my books from first year).
