I genuinely had a disadvantage this year. But according to various universities, my problem was "Minor". They believe having a chance to die >50%, being incapacitated, bed ridden and also spending thousands on specialist treatment is not worthy of recieving an EAS whereas stories i've heard about people breaking their god damn toe have gotten in.

During the time i was sick i recieved about 5 estimates during mid year assessments becuase i was sick for 2 months. From what i hear, people with NO disadvantage have had applications lodged to the EAS by the SCHOOL on their behalf and gaining an EAS. Do you realise how fuming this is? Those people just ruined any chance of me getting into the course i want!

Curse those who have taken my spot and didn't need it. The person who lodged your application, be it the school or yourself should be ashamed. No lets go further. Rot in hell.

Some people have no morals...

and I've had parents with cancer and deaths in family? we all got different circumstances. I'd rather be sick and die than watching my parents because you know you are helpess.

On another note, my letter was saying some courses you get from 3-5 UAI (from UNSW), isn't it upto 10?

You aren't included in my curse. Only those who didn't need it are =). And i do believe it is up to 10. However 3-5 is also up to 10.

I'm really worried about this as well. I plan on applying for EAS on the basis of long term illness. I've been chronically ill for 3 years now, have missed out on so much school (50% of year 9, 40% of year 10, about 35% of year 11), and am now more sick than ever and finding getting through year 12 so hard. I've had to start Pathways because taking on 10units is just way too much, and at the moment am taking 5U - which is still too much to cope with.

I hate to think that there's people like you and I, who have genuine reasons for applying for EAS - miss out on it because of some dickheads who were just lazy and are trying their hardest to make up some kind of excuse so they can get into their courses.

It's not fair - people who have genuine reasons for applying for EAS have suffered enough already :(

Do any of you guys get austudy? U should have applied during the hsc year as you automatically get the EAS as soon as you write that you recieve youth allowance from centrelink. I know so many people who applied this year for youth allowance just to get the EAS, and they did!

Serious? I get youth allowance. Meh, didn't need EAS anyway. Guilt would have killed me. Especially since I'm 10 points in front of the cutoff already.

It is up to 10 points by allocation, but because of the competition for places the EAS cut-off may only be 3-5 below. Thats what the yellow brochure thing says.

I think that is a horrible abuse of what EAS is - to apply for no other reason than that you recieve Youth Allowance. EAS is designed to aid those who suffer a significant disadvantage during their studies in entering the higher education system and while suffering intense financial difficulties does IMO count as significant, receipt of Youth Allowance most certainly does not.

I applied for EAS because I was in a youth refuge for a month. It was declined, but now reading some other people's circumstances, I know people have had it tougher than me so I can't complain

no students at my school applied for it and the school didnt apply us as group for it either.. ..UAC just sent us a letter and said we are automatically in it because of our school. So really, it was out of our control.

Macquarie sent me a letter saying im allocated 4 bonus points today. If 5 is the maximum and we got 4.. That would mean we were were fairly disadvantaged.. under the eyes of the EAS system, But I on the other hand thought we recieved no disadvantage at all.
hey what school r u froma nd why were u disadvantaged!

Hah, I'm looking at psychology:

B Psychology
Non-Access CSP: 95.05
Access CSP: 94.20 <<
Non-Access DFEE: 91.95
Access DFEE: 86.05 << :(

Bugger them. I'm still putting it on my prefs anyway and going to hope I get it (if I don't get into Sydney, of course).

Hey,
what school are you from? If students from certain schools are getting this than I dont see why my school didn't.

Those of you applying for EAS next year. Around 1st Feb start ringing people (there should be a number to call if you have questions about the EAS) and tell them your case and ask advice on what you should put in your form. Any time you apply for something like this you should make a couple of calls and talk to people in the know before hand. I didn't apply because I am taking the year off, but I am now thinking I should have

Yeah, there is a thread like this every year it seems. It's unfortunate, but there are some geniune claims who don't get EAS and there are false/less serious applications that do. I'm sorry for those who didn't get it, but just believe that there is a reason for everything and perhaps there was a reason for this.

I think some people were refused EAS because they either had little in way of paper evidence (which is difficult to obtain in some situations) or did not explain how those situations really impacted their study.

e.g. mother falls ill -> must look after her and the family, caring for siblings and taking a part-time job -> detracts time from study and causes anxiety/depression, non-productive study environment

I hope that people who apply for this next year make sure that they explain their situation clearly and sincerely; they don't know unless you make them understand.

Automatic? No. It's just one determining factor. Don't exaggerate.

Youth Allowance = evidence of financial difficulty. You need to fall under an income level to qualify for any amount of allowance; and it's a very low income level. I think someone whose total family income is <$20,000 a year has a significant disadvantage in their studies against kids who come from more prosperous families. Income affects all areas of your lifestyle; psychologically, for one. You can't have a fair system if you don't take that into account.

Youth Allowance can help prove your personal income level, it doesn't take into account factors such as your families income unless you wish to declare yourself independent which few HSC students are. Otherwise Youth Allowance indicates squat about your environment and thus receipt of Youth Allowance is not a good enough reason on its own to apply and end up depriving others of a spot.

Youth Allowance does actually take into account your immediate families income. You cannot recieve youth allowance if your parents earn over a certain amount

Criteria for Youth Allowance, from Centrelink website:

Youth Allowance is subject to an Income Test and Assets Test. If you are not independent a Parental Income test applies. A Family Actual Means test may also apply.
