IRA statement in full
The IRA's full statement, in which its leadership ordered an end to the armed campaign.
The leadership of Oglaigh na hEireann has formally ordered an end to the armed campaign.

This will take effect from 4pm [1600 BST] this afternoon.

All IRA units have been ordered to dump arms.

All Volunteers have been instructed to assist the development of purely political and democratic programmes through exclusively peaceful means.

Volunteers must not engage in any other activities whatsoever.

The IRA leadership has also authorised our representative to engage with the IICD [Independent International Commission on Decommissioning] to complete the process to verifiably put its arms beyond use in a way which will further enhance public confidence and to conclude this as quickly as possible.

We have invited two independent witnesses, from the Protestant and Catholic churches, to testify to this.

The Army Council took these decisions following an unprecedented internal discussion and consultation process with IRA units and Volunteers.

We appreciate the honest and forthright way in which the consultation process was carried out and the depth and content of the submissions.

We are proud of the comradely way in which this truly historic discussion was conducted. The outcome of our consultations show very strong support among IRA Volunteers for the Sinn Fein peace strategy.

There is also widespread concern about the failure of the two governments and the unionists to fully engage in the peace process.

This has created real difficulties. The overwhelming majority of people in Ireland fully support this process.

They and friends of Irish unity throughout the world want to see the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.

Notwithstanding these difficulties our decisions have been taken to advance our republican and democratic objectives, including our goal of a united Ireland.

We believe there is now an alternative way to achieve this and to end British rule in our country. It is the responsibility of all Volunteers to show leadership, determination and courage.

We are very mindful of the sacrifices of our patriot dead, those who went to jail, Volunteers, their families and the wider republican base.

We reiterate our view that the armed struggle was entirely legitimate. We are conscious that many people suffered in the conflict.

There is a compelling imperative on all sides to build a just and lasting peace. The issue of the defence of nationalist and republican communities has been raised with us.

There is a responsibility on society to ensure that there is no re-occurrence of the pogroms of 1969 and the early 1970s.

There is also a universal responsibility to tackle sectarianism in all its forms.

The IRA is fully committed to the goals of Irish unity and independence and to building the Republic outlined in the 1916 Proclamation.

We call for maximum unity and effort by Irish republicans everywhere. We are confident that by working together Irish republicans can achieve our objectives.

Every Volunteer is aware of the import of the decisions we have taken and all Oglaigh are compelled to fully comply with these orders.

There is now an unprecedented opportunity to utilise the considerable energy and goodwill which there is for the peace process.

This comprehensive series of unparalleled initiatives is our contribution to this and to the continued endeavours to bring about independence and unity for the people of Ireland

That's fantastic news. Perhaps Ireland is now going to pave the way for other nations with religion based fighting.
Perfect example, if it works, of how maturity on both sides can end the bloodshed.

Are you reading this, Palestine!

back to the main point-
i think its good, but as much as the talk is brilliant there needs to be action.
i just hope that if some IRA nut goes and shoots a unionist people dont flare up again- the fringes of the IRA might be extreme but it doesn't represent the whole cause.

It'll be treated as a criminal event, rather than a political event.. hopefully.
That's what many 'commentators' see as the main problem with this statement.

They say that NI hasn't really seen any armed fighting for a while now (it is relatively peaceful) so this is just a token statement which doesn''t really change anything.

But the real problem they say with the IRA is the criminal element (robberies, kidnappings, assaults etc) which is they main problem currently in NI, and this statement does nothing to address these issues, so while there would be now less chance of an armed fight, the local criminal element will remain.

A criminal element that is just as likely to exist within the Protestant paramilitary organisations. It isn't only the nuts from the IRA/republican side that may threaten the process.

That it's a formal declaration (and that the three men have disengaged from a body that they have previously denied being a part of) and that it is ordering its members to disarm (and have the process independently verified) is quite a step forward, and, from what I can gather, as much as anyone could expect.

Stupid pussy IRA, they couldn't even stop Britain from stealing irish land.
If they had a nuclear device or some other WMD to make threats with, I'm sure all those union jack flag waving NI unionists would of buggered off back to their beloved motherland quick smart.

The IRA (or its ancestors) achieved the freedom of Southern Ireland.......

The creation of good U2 songs......

Far better conditions for the irish than they previously had.....

Representation in the british parliament.....

I forget the source however there is a quote that ireland was lost to the british the moment polling closed for the first time and the republicans returned an overwhelming majority.

The conflict has little to do with religion, it has to do allot with land. Some of the founding members of Sinn Fein were secular or protestant. I have been told by a youth member of Sien Fein or it may have been the Socialist Republican party, either way that there are some in the republican movement who are protestant and he himself is a marxist-leninist-Connollite. Therefore he is an atheist.

The media and naive public, even people themselves in national liberation movements often simplifier it to a religious movement, like in Palestine. Even though in every national liberation movement there have been secular groups.

Although there are some movements like the Aceh movement which is primarily concerned with religion.

But back to Ireland, I was told that the Unionist/loyalist I have even heard the word orange jackets, have never apologised for theirs crimes.

As you said, they are retards.

I personally think that it is because of the London bombings.
I guess that either:
1. They decided to call it a day out of misguided loyalty to Britain
or
2. they decided that they had been exposed as amateurs by the sheer lethality
of the london bombings.
They were never going for lethality. IRA bombings very rarely targetted civilians.

This has been in the offing for some time, too. The recent London bombings may well be a mere coincidence as far as the IRA and its members are concerned.

i think we should just pray the weapons stay down. the problem is, the IRA is some people's entire lifestyle, and they wont give it up easily...its what they have geared their whole life towards it, and disarming isnt what they term a 'victory'.

we'll just have to wait and see.

They may have (supposedly) put down their guns, but that doesn't change the fact they are largely a bunch of thugs. We should be thankful that in Australia we have no political parties like Sinn Fein involved in punishment beatings, drug-running and gangster-run businesses. It really sadens me that people in Australia the US, Canada etc. send money to support these people. They are probably the richest political party in Europe because of their criminality. Don't expect Sinn Fein to return the $50-100 million dollars to the shareholders of the National Australia Bank that they stole.

Bigger thugs than the Unionist? Who have hunted down civilian Catholics?

Well thats because the originall inhabitants of Australia had many Social Darwinist campaigns acted agaisn't them that the dwindled in growth. So a anti colonial movement never picked up to the extent of an effective militant movement.

Don't expect Sinn Fein to return the $50-100 million dollars to the shareholders of the National Australia Bank that they stole.
There is no proof that they were involved in that robery, or alot of other claims.
