The missing '8' (1 Viewer)

Merry Christmas all,

Here's one that you can get your family to think at the dinner table. You may or may not have seen this before. For those who have don't answer.

$\frac{1}{81}=0.012345679$

$(Produces all single digits 0-9, except for 8)$

$\frac{1}{9801}=0.01020304050607....969799$

$(Produces all double digits except for 00-99 except for 98)$

$\frac{1}{998001}=0.001002003....996997999$

$(Produces all triple digits 000-999 except for 998)$

Was wondering if anyone can figure out using their own reasoning (without Googling) to why this may occur (how do we account for the missing 8?)

(For 2013ers and below only)

$9^2 =81 = 8 \times 10 + 1$

$99^2=9801=98 \times 100 +1$

$999^2=998001=998 \times 1000 +1$

this is my guess, latexing is too hard on my phone to continue
