How can I tell you if I don't even know?
Hey there,

I was wonderng if anyone could tell me 'what was significant about the USSR establishing diplomatic relations with the USA in 1933?' Even if you could point me to some useful sites or something...

I understood why they formed relations with Britain but can't find any info about their USA relations... perhaps there were similar reasons with the two relations?

Anyways, any help at all would be greatly appreciated...

Many thanks...:)

thats just a guess - could be way off track but it seems familar...

It was the first time the world's major capitalist country (USA) recognised Communist Russia. The USSR had a very aggressive foreign policy during the 1920's, which was that of "world wide revolution" that involved the overthrow of the 'capitalist enemies'. Naturally the USA, was alarmed and particularly iritated.
So the establishment of diplomatic ties is very significant.
The very next year (1934), the USSR was admitted to the League of Nations, which further progress with the 'West'.
The reasons for this change in stance towards capitalist countries include Hitler's rise in Germany and the Japanese invasion of Manchuria (borders USSR's eastern frontier).
