The cultural revolution didn't really contribute to the modernisation of China. It left many students uneducated and unskilled as teachers, exams and other were thought of as capitalist. Reading was also loathed as in Mao's doctrine 'reading made you dumb'. Mao Zedong did however acquire some machinery and equipment from Russia which he paid for in wheat. Mao didn't industrialise China as Stalin did Russia, Mao made people make 'steel' out of any metal they could find rather than invest in the proper materials and industry.
