Look up wireless transmission of information,
Modulating amplititude = AM
Modulating frequency = FM

Research on Marconi or radiowaves and you'll be able to understand modulation in terms of AM and FM.

(I don't do Engineering Studies btw, but I thought I'd try and help you here, hope it helps you a little/puts you on the right track )

AM= Amplitude Modulation...these use lower frequency electromagnetic waves, and the advantage is that it has a significantly longer range and doesnt need a direct line of sight between sender and receiver, although the downside is that the sound quality is crap compared to FM Radio...
