wat does a transistor do differently to the other ones similar to it, like a triode, or even a pentode.

and how do the solid-state devices allow current to flow in one direction.... i always seem to forget this one.

Solid state devices act as diodes when an n-type semiconductor is joined with a p-type semiconductor. What happens is that theres a migration of electrons from tehn layer to teh p layer, causing teh p-type to become negative and the n-type to become positive. This potential difference causes current to only flow in one direction.

one of the main advantages of solid state devices over valve devices (triodes) would be the size differnce. solid state can be microscopic whereas valves are huge

and they operate as rama_v has stated

the electrons can jump down but cant jump up
