Do we have to know how they work (p-n junctions etc etc) or just how their discovery came about and their effect on society?

The syllabus doesn't explictly state that you need to know how they work. But my Physics teacher said that it's one of those borderlines things so it's better off knowing how they work incase they ask it.

they could sneak in something related to it.
i remember in 2007 or so they asked an implicit question on emf, which is equal to the rate of change of magnetic flux over the rate of change of time.
