Hello.

I was just curious, how much of the preliminary stuff does one need to know to do well in the HSC course. The reason I'm asking is that I don't know any of the Preliminary course, and well yeah, I'm trying to get my act together for HSC. And I want to do well, am I doomed??

Thanks.

There was a thread on this somewhere but I can't seem to find it.

Not much of the prelim stuff is in the HSC course. Only redox reactions, moles of substances, normal reactions (eg. combustion...etc) and some precipitation reactions (but you really don't need to know the solubility table). So, you're not doomed. You'll re-learn all the stuff this year and next year. :)

I didn't even look at my prelim stuff for the HSC :)

prelim is not tested directly in the HSC, but you'll find it is a necessary foundation for understanding basic concepts in chemistry like all the structure and bonding crap you did in the chemical earth of ionic covalent mollectular/netwrok etc etc and ofcourse stoicometric calculations in the metal topic are used in different HSC chem topics

Some is tested

The bored of studies tests can test up to 50% of the prelim course if they wish within the HSC, that is the actual figures.
But as "HSC 4 Life" said, all of the course is important building blocks for the HSC year.

Actually they can, they are able to test up to 50% of the prelim year, In other words half the HSC exam can be on prelim work...
However this is usually no the case, The HSC usulla contains some prelim however the board of studies dont test the full 50% they are allowed to test, usually up to 20%
I dont think they'd change it just for us aswell

Basically if you know everything from the HSC course, you will then know 95% of stuff from the preliminary stuff. An example of exception is surface tension, it is not in the HSC course.

have a look at past HSC papers, usually prelim questions are piss easy and common knowledge, if you dont know them then you wouldnt be able to build your year 12 knowledge of chem :uhhuh:

This is not correct. You are either lying or have been misinformed.

Officially, HSC chemistry is what is tested and, where reasonable, preliminary can be tested if it pertains directly to the question at hand. i.e. preliminary is assumed knowledge, but you WILL not get any questions on the preliminary course.
