When I have my approximation and the exact area, how do I "express the error caused by the approximation as a percentage of the exact area? " For example, approximation = 1.17 and exact area = 7/6. What's the working out for this?

This is the formula for percentage error.

.

If this yields a negative percentage, this indicates that your estimate is an underestimate.

So basically (1.17-7/6)/7/6 *100% (if that makes sense to you) and the answer is 7.93%.

Thanks InteGrand.
