He spent a great deal of time trying to find the true site of the trojan war.
When he did decide on teh site he believed was troy - he excuvated the site - and did find what was believed to be a city of troy but in his 'enthusiasm' he was believed to have destoryed the real site of the trojan war.
He was a bit dodgy in some of his works and claims - he believed he had found the death mask of agammenon (which ended up being alot older then possiable trojan war time)
There was also an some questioning about what he actually did find because he wrote in his diaries that he have found some loot of troy and he and his wife had taken it etc etc... But all records show that his wife wasn't there - and later he said that he felt he jsut needed to include her in his journals.
Its all a bit questionable actually
