I was just wondering, is there a rule stating that you are not allowed to use a true story as the basis of your short story/major work?

I am more than sure that many have and many do/will.

However you must be sure that you are not merely "recounting" a story - I would advise that you recreate it in a unique/unusual/innovative/creative way, looking at it from a different perspective etc.

It may be imaginative, investigative, analytical or any combination of these. The chosen form and medium must be appropriate to the nature of the task, the students interests and abilities and the resources available.

If you can make it apply to that, it should be fine.
