Who got the TSP offer letter today and out of you who actually wants to/is considering doing it?

I havnt decided yet leaning more towards no though, still trying to figure out what (if any) advantage or benefits i will get from it in my subject area.

why would you? it just seems like more pressure on your study.
TSP can be used to help you bludge legitimately if you want to, by choosing something that require as little work as possible.

i say do it if you can-
first of all, by completing it, you're able to differentiate yourself from the rest of the science cohort and i guess make you more competitive to an employer etc.
not saying it makes you better then anyone else or anything, but shows that you have the motivation to take challenging iniatives such as these

and also- its kind of an indication that you excelled in the final years of your schooling given the strict invitation criteria- something employers etc. may not be aware of since your schooling becomes less important as time goes on. it makes clear your potential and is able to remind others of old achievements still noteworthy

actually not doing it would be a shame.

if u are considering pursuing a careerin the field of science, then tsp is a must do... u do research (which is usually post grad work) in ur first yr uni... u work with a group of pplz and gather material and do a research in the area u are interested in and u usually would have to give a presentation at the end of the semester...

in the maths school i think u do soem 3rd yr topic in ur first yr, so u may finish ur degree earlier...

i've got to do it as a result of my degree, but I'll be doing tsp in chem and phys probably, or ssp or whatever in chem and maths. Hmm, can someone explain the relationship between, say tsp and ssp in chem and maths?

The maths ssp is just one extra seminar each week in addition to the usual advanced lectures. The ssp class stays in the same tutorial as well so you get the opportunity to meet with the top 30 maths ppl in this uni.

For tsp, you can do mainly two things. One, to take higher year courses in 1st year. Two, to do special projects under the supervision of academics. For the 2nd one you need to line up with an interested lecturer to sponsor you. However, being in the tsp doesn't mean you have any obligation to do those things. You can just live a normal non-TSPer's life. tsp is for those that want to take advantage of it. And most ppl do.

The thing is if i do TSP it will most likely be in the field of my degree, being IT. I cant really do it for maths as i did not do Extension 2 and i dont see the point of doing it for physics as at most i will only be taking PHYS 1901, the rest will be IT related subjects.

There is nothing wrong with concentrating on your area of expertise. There aren't that many ppl taking TSP in three different subject areas. If you have previous programming experience, you will be able to find IT projects that interest you and you are capable of doing. The school of IT is highly specialised in a number of areas. Talk to your mentor and she'll arrange it for you. I assure you that it'll be far more fun compared to the 1st year software courses.

There were ppl with Olympiad experience doing 2nd year physics in 1st year. But apart from that, I think what you are saying is right.

In February I think. It will be the same letter as the one you got in 1st year. I haven't got mine either. In fact I haven't been thinking about it. Just sit and wait.
