I know that for all u yr 12's in 2005 that u mite think that study is a burden/boring and all that shit (which it definately is)

But the thing is that u gotta keep at it, i know heeps of ppl say "dont get distracted" but they are totally right, its especially bad if u get distracted and do no study during stuvac (even tho u should be studin b4 hand).

U gotta sometimes miss going out with friends, but itll be worth it in the end. U dont wanna be in the position of chekin ur UAI in december and being totally depressed over what you got/ missing ur preferences and havin no idea wat ur gonna do.

You only get wat effort u put in. Of course, u gotta go out sometimes 2 clear ur mind and chill out. But dont let the easiest things distract you, such as MSN, phone calls with friends, music, or doing ne thing else, coz it catches up 2 u in the long run, seriously. Just givin u some advice, coz wen u come out of an exam thinkin u did badly, it will fuck you up for ur next ones. If u study and know ur shit and come out of the exam feeling good, ull be ready and calm for ur next one.

Newayz, good luck to everyone in yr 12 2005.

P.s. If any of u need some advice about studying/ hsc in general, just reply and ill do the best i can.

my turn my turn!

Forget the cliche. It doesn't matter how you do this year 12 thing, no matter your goal. So what if you get shitty marks? Don't get cut when your teacher thinks your crap. I never got past over the halfway mark for Extension English 2 (i got continuous 7/15's) all the fucking time. I thought all hope was lost. I was ranked terribly. And I landed an E4. (highest band)

Let everything motivate you. Your teacher is a wanker, then prove the bastard wrong. Your parents think that you can't do any better than an asterisk, then prove them wrong. If your parents or peers have high expectations of you, don't forget to be true to yourself. Don't ever lose sight of what you want to do. It doesn't mean you are less than what you should be, just because they think you are "more". It could be their weird way to push you.

If you think you can't take it anymore, you know how to chill down. You've had years to figure out what you love, so do it. Especially if you're doing creative subjects. I had incredible family problems, and I decided to express this in my English Extension Majorwork. I expressed it in the music I composed. I drew the one musician I loved and worshipped in my Visual Arts majorwork. If its the maths and the science, don't make yourself suffer and force yourself to remember. Be passionate. Don't do it just for the mark, the uai. Enjoy it. Afterall, they should have been one of the reasons why you chose them? Even though THAT sounds like a cliche, you'll be amazed how many times you'll lose sight of it.

And don't forget to cherish those small moments with your friends. Even the soft silent ones, like a passing smile. They may be one of your last memories of them when you split up to the real world.

Good luck. :)

ur_inner_child definately said it like it is, so thanx for that.

For all u that are saying im stating the obvious, i guess i am, so sorry. But stating the obvious doesnt guarantee that uz will study more - ok i know uve herd it but coming from experience, its tru.

Im only tryin 2 help uz coz ive done it and know how stressful it is. If u wanna be assholes about it then thats ok - i juz hope u dont duffer in the long run.

if stating the obvious means to tell people some wonderful advice that others may have never heard before, and along the way, stepping on people's toes who may have heard it once before, then i guess shady_03 is committing a crime. but fuck, seriously, if you dont want to hear something again, why the hell are you guys reading the thread? and more so, why the hell did you reply?! its beyond me.

OK now it's time for my 2c:

The HSC is not difficult if you approach it the right way. I'm telling you right now that it's just a game, it has little to do with natural abiliity, more to do with how much you can remember and how fast you can write it down. Why is this? Because the board says those are the rules. This brings me to my first point: learn to write fast now. It will save you grief in English/History/whatever else exams later. The board has also made it such that you do not have to study hard, rather you must study smart. If you're reading a textbook you are retaining some information, if you are copying it out you are retaining more, but you reach maximum study efficiency why you change the forum of the text. If it's in paragraphs, do a table or dot points or something similar. My third piece of advice, particularly applicable for sciences and maths is to do as many past papers as possible, exam technique is imperative in these subjects. My fourth point applies to English/History/SOR : write blanket essays, and write them out over and over til you have a decent writing speed and you remember them. Then practice adapting these essays to different questions and forms found in past HSC papers and trials. Finally, learn to relax. The HSC is not the end of the world, and the end exams aren't anywhere near as confronting as you perceive them to be at this stage, if you are relaxed you will make better use of your study time and hence have more time to have fun. And that's about all I can think of at the moment, if I remember anything else I'll add it.:)

withoutaface's first point is absolutely right. There's nothing worse than realising you've got five minutes left but have only done 3/4 of your essay and you can't physically write any faster.

Something to keep in mind at the same time, though, is that your writing should also be legible. Examiners will be kinder to you if they don't have to spend hours deciphering your scrawl. It puts them in a bad mood and makes them less generous. Plus, you can read it yourself more easily. It's also good practice for university, where if a marker thinks your work is illegible, he/she will simply not mark it and you won't get any marks.

Spelling, punctuation and grammar are important too, especially in essay-heavy exams. They improve your essay's "impression" which can only be a positive thing.
