Hey i was wondering. How many people get (in terms of
percentage) get 80+ 90+ and 95+ UAI?

I heard it was something like 30% get 80+, 16% get 90+
not sure about 95+. Are these right?

Those figures are almost correct.

See the following extract from the Technical Committee's Report on the Scaling of the 2001 HSC. The figures were also the same in 2002.

<h5>Table 1: Percentage of UAI students receiving specific UAIs and above in 2000 and 2001.</h5><table border="0" width="180" cellpadding="4"><tr valign="top"><td width="71"><div align="center"><b>UAI</b></div></td><td colspan="2"><div align="center"><b>Percentage</b></div></td></tr><tr valign="top"><td width="71" bgcolor="#FFCC00"><div align="center">&nbsp;</div></td><td width="46" bgcolor="#FFFF00"><div align="center">2000 </div></td><td width="41" bgcolor="#CCFF99"><div align="center">2001</div></td></tr><tr valign="top"><td width="71" bgcolor="#FFCC00"><div align="center">99.00</div></td><td width="46" bgcolor="#FFFF00"><div align="center">2</div></td><td width="41" bgcolor="#CCFF99"><div align="center">2</div></td></tr><tr valign="top"><td width="71" bgcolor="#FFCC00"><div align="center">95.00</div></td><td width="46" bgcolor="#FFFF00"><div align="center">8</div></td><td width="41" bgcolor="#CCFF99"><div align="center">8</div></td></tr><tr valign="top"><td width="71" bgcolor="#FFCC00"><div align="center">90.00</div></td><td width="46" bgcolor="#FFFF00"><div align="center">16</div></td><td width="41" bgcolor="#CCFF99"><div align="center">16</div></td></tr><tr valign="top"><td width="71" bgcolor="#FFCC00"><div align="center">80.00</div></td><td width="46" bgcolor="#FFFF00"><div align="center">31</div></td><td width="41" bgcolor="#CCFF99"><div align="center">31</div></td></tr><tr valign="top"><td width="71" bgcolor="#FFCC00"><div align="center">70.00</div></td><td width="46" bgcolor="#FFFF00"><div align="center">45</div></td><td width="41" bgcolor="#CCFF99"><div align="center">45</div></td></tr><tr valign="top"><td width="71" bgcolor="#FFCC00"><div align="center">60.00</div></td><td width="46" bgcolor="#FFFF00"><div align="center">58</div></td><td width="41" bgcolor="#CCFF99"><div align="center">58</div></td></tr><tr valign="top"><td width="71" bgcolor="#FFCC00"><div align="center">50.00</div></td><td width="46" bgcolor="#FFFF00"><div align="center">69</div></td><td width="41" bgcolor="#CCFF99"><div align="center">69</div></td></tr></table>

Less than 31% of students receive UAIs under 50 - there are even fewer below 40 and 30.

Nothing "happens" to them, they're just usually lumped in together for statistical purposes. :)

I'm not trying to throw a spanner in the wood works here but from what i can gather, these statatics mean very lettle as most people who wish to recieve an UAI would actually beat those who dont wish to recieve an UAI so in realistic terms, for someone to get over 90 UAI they need to beat very close to 90% of those who have finished the school statistics, My point, forget about statsctics and just do your best!!

That's correct - this is why the percentages in the table don't correlate exactly with the UAI percentile.

A student with a UAI of 90.00 is in the top 10% of their School Certificate cohort, but in the top 16% of their HSC cohort.

On this note does ENTER scores use the yr 10 cohort or does it use a yr 12 one. I'm just wondering as they are equivalent.

The rank used for admission to universities in each state compares students against their state age cohort - i.e. everyone who was in their grade during the compulsory schooling years.

In NSW, we use the School Certificate (which everyone takes) as a benchmark to rank students. In our case, the state age cohort just happens to coincide with the Yr 10 SC cohort.

The other states might use different tests or examinations to rank students, but they are all ranked within their state age cohort. That's why the different indexes are comparable between states.
