Hey,

Just wanted some thoughts on what people think of Uni Vs Private Colleges.

I am looking at going to Sydney Graphic College, which offers a three year Bachelor of Design. The fees are about $8900 per year, which I don't think is really all that expensive when you look at facilities and standard of teaching etc. Doesn't uni cost approx that much anyway?

Do you think a private college education prepares the student better for employment?

Anyone have any personal experiences with private colleges, Sydney Graphic College in particular?

Is the workload and intensity of the course extremely demanding at a private college?

Would love to hear your thoughts

i used to work (for about 18 months) with one of the people who is now a senior lecturer at sydney graphic college (simon blazey). he was the shiznit when it came to graphics. if he is any indication of the standard there you will be well served, cause its a lot more than pretty pictures.

Ok I have the answer right here....

College is better in the sense that its more tangible rather than theory/lecture based... u still get lectures and have theory but its more hands on. The classes are also waaaaay smaller so u have a better student:teacher ratio, so u have more opportunity to approach the teacher.

Ive done a few short courses for digital design at both colleges and Unis and Ive found that colleges are better and they are better quality. I found the uni courses to be kind of draining also.. but in the end its up to you.

I got accepted into both College and Uni and I actually rejected my Uni offer cos I wanna go to KvB and am.. start in Feb :p

PM me if u wanna know more

Ive done a few short courses and attended seminars at private institutions and colleges and unis. Ive spent the past couple of years really wondering where I wanted to go after the HSC.

I thought about going to KvB and Billy Blue ... but now Ive decided to do the double at Wollongong Uni ... I decided after visiting the uni, looking at some of the designs of current students / student projects. If these were anything to go by then I dont regret choosing a creative arts degree at uni.

I would like to hear about the differences in learning structure etc between the different colleges and uni's though, im sure itd be interesting :)

I also beleive that if you have the talent and drive, that you will do fine and become successful no matter which or what institution you choose to attend.

I hope that we all have fun anywhooz, I cant wait to get started. :) :) :) :)

Thanks

Thanks for your posts......it is great to hear what other people think.

Pogiangel - I applied for Visual Arts/Graphic Design at UOW and wasn't accepted, so this is why I am looking at a private college. I applied as a mature age student and really thought I would be accepted as I believe I am talented and had previously gained the highest marks in the state for a tafe course I did in design. I am kind of glad now that I wasn't accepted as I am starting to believe that a uni education was not for me in the first place. I hope you enjoy your course and wish you all the best for your degree :)

Flipsyde - How much are the fees at KvB? Have you looked into Sydney Graphics College? What do u think of their program, and what made u choose KvB?

It is all so scary! Too many options! Would still love to hear everyones thoughts, especially if you have more info on Sydney Graphics College........

PM'd you

KvB is ummm.. I forgot how much it is because Im paying via HELP (the new HECS). KvB is recognised by the Australian Government as a higher education provider, therefore you can get HELP (HECS) to pay for it.

The courses at SGC looked great but I prefferred going with KvB fro a few reasons
1- The fee help
2- Its an actuall degree that internationally recognised
3- It had a lot of reputation
4- I was looking at more than just graphic design. KvB does graphic design but if you wan tyou can also do we design,cd-rom design etc etc as well

"We are the only Degree level institution in Australia which is dedicated solely to the study of graphic design." as it clearly says in their brochure or somthing... There are also not may jobs in the graphic design industry... they like people to be able to do more than just graphics.

Realistically, I think, no one college can be better than the other, its what you put into it and what you want out of it. I didnt think I'd get out of SGC what Im gonna get out of KvB but thats my personal opinion. You should ask them questions and make your own decision up. You could ask me which one is better and Ill say KvB, but thats cos its the one I felt was best for me.

SGC may be best for you, KvB may be best for you.. it all depends.. you willhave to have interviews for both.. so why dont you ask questions at the interview.. I had many for KvB and they were like "Oh its good to ask questions, thats how you learn" so just ask.. they wont bite ur head off :)

theres more info in the PM I sent you

Fee-help

Hi Flipsyde,

Thanks for getting back to me.
I had no idea that HELP was available for private institutions! Wow, you've opened up a world of possibilities for me now!

You've mentioned some very important things. It is very difficult to gain employment in the graphic design industry and it is true that they like you to have a broad range of skills. I'm so glad I found this site, I feel like I am making an informed choice now. Thanks so much!

Cheers!

No uni cost nowhere near that unless your doing law or medicine, or something else in that tier

You may also wanna make sure you can get work experience while studying, cause alot of graphic design jobs require experience, i know cause my bro found it hard after going to TAFE for graphic design, but he's got a job now in it

University is better than private college in every single field. unless employers are being paid to take on a certain amount of private college graduates, they wont take them over people from university with a portfolio of work of a similar standard.

that said, you could also try Enmore tafe, its supposedly good for design

I've heard only the most amazing things about enmore. I never really got much of a chance to investigate further, but from established designers, i hear it is top notch.

go for a private college

smaller classes, and you get FeeHelp!

i'm at a college that also offers degrees in business, education, theology, nursing, science, etc. (my degree's under the 'arts' banner) so its not a specialised graphics institution like KvB... but that means you get more diversity of subject choices and a range of double degree options as well, (usually u need to go to a uni for these), so it works for me :)
