Unsure whether I will enjoy law (1 Viewer)

I'm considering doing an Arts/Law or an International Studies/Law degree, but I'm not sure if the law part is right for me.

I'm doing my HSC now, and I love english. I also take Legal Studies, and I usually enjoy it, but my teacher is...difficult.

I enjoy studying the cases and debating the morals/ethics in class, but I'm starting to become annoyed with the subject (I think it's caused by the teacher, but I'm worried that it's actually the subject, and that I won't like law at uni)

So give me your opinion. Do you think that I will enjoy law? I've been looking at the other threads and I'm still really confused.

This is really something that only you can answer with certainty.

But what exactly are you confused about?

I think you also need to work out exactly why you're becoming annoyed with the subject, whether it's the subject itself or the 'difficult' teacher.

If this difficult teacher was teaching your other subjects as well, would you also become annoyed at those subjects?

Why are you more sure of doing Arts or International Studies?

I think that my biggest problem with Legal Studies currently is the lack of depth - probably due to the teacher. I find that we brush over the current legislation, give an example case, and leave it at that.

I like looking at the way law is used - how it works, the loopholes or problems, how it can be used e.t.c. Can you tell me the differences in a law degree? Is it theoretically based, or does it have application?

I would most likely be annoyed in another subject because of the teacher; his lack of grammar and spelling really annoys me, and he often words questions in his own way that doesn't seem logical. Also, he rambles about nothing...I guess I'm annoyed at his inefficiency - I'm the kind of person that likes everything organised and scheduled.

I'm thinking of Arts or International Studies because basically all of my HSC subjects are humanities based and I really enjoy all of them.

dear prospective law student,

be mindful of drawing a similarity between HSC legal studies and law. they are as different as apples and oranges.

when you do a law degree, you will encounter many areas of law. some will be more theoretical (eg, constitutional law). others will be purely practical (eg, securities law, legal research). and yes, a LLB will give you good groundwork training to become a lawyer, should you wish to become one. even if you don't, it will exercise and develop your written and spoken communication, problem-solving and analytical skills.

law is a generalist rather than specialist degree. it is an ideal complement to your interest in humanities.
