can someone please give me a simple definition of insitutionalised inequality? it would be greatly appreciated : )
is institutionalised inequality caused by formal equality??

Formal Equality refers to legislation that attempts to ensure individuals are treated equally. eg. Anti-Discrimination Act. while Institutionalised inequality refers to indivduals being treated based on their status or characteristics. ie. Those with more money, better education and power have better access to the legal system, thus a better chance of being treated fairly compared to those who do not have money or lack education.

so basically formal equality is treating everyone exactly the same, reguardless, and institutionalised inequality is the result of this?? its what occurs when the legal system attempts to treat everyone the same, but in fact people are different thus it results in unequal treatment? i hope i have grasped the point correctly, cos i just saw a past question worth 5 marks on it.
