my sista brought an ipod and it requires it to install a driver before the ipod is recognised...that has been done but the device still cannot be recognised....what are the possible problems/soloutiojns

also, the ipod claims to act as a storage device as well....how does that work?

When you plug the Ipod in, windows should automatically install it. I plugged my Ipod into my old p3 800 running Windows 2000 about an hour ago (after my new computer decided to spit the dummy), and works straight off.

To enable it as a storage device, you need to install iTunes, plug in the Ipod, go to options and there's an option somewhere there to "use as disk drive". This means it'll add a hard drive icon to 'My Computer'. I don't have Itunes installed currently so I can't point out the exact location, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.

i have xp...

i know if i install itunes itll act as a storgae device...but what if i want to transport those files to another computer....?...will it work or do i have to install itunes as well?

you shouldn't need to install itunes. It should act as a removable device. Plus ur using xp so it should be driverless.... hmmm

Yes. XP should be driverless with the Ipod. You should plug it in, it should install it, and then run the Ipod updater to put the latest software on there. Could you please re-iterate the steps taken so far?

And once you install Itunes on one computer, you can use this to enable the Ipod as a hard drive. Once the Ipod is enabled, it will be a hard drive everywhere you plug it in. Itunes only needs to be installed on the first computer you plug the Ipod into.

it might be an apple ipod rather than a windows one, so you need to format it to fat32

apple _should_ automatically install without even needing any update, providing windows is relatively upto date

Most ipods require a format before using them, if you obviously format it then it knows your on windows and formats as a fat32

It appears as a removable storage on mine, but then again im using firewire ... but it did same thing on the comps at school with my usb cord

You don't really need USB 2.0, i've got 1.x and when i plug the ipod in it just says "HI-SPEED USB device plugged into non-HI-SPEED USB hub. To remedy this problem click this balloon" and when done so it tells me to buy a usb 2 hub. lol. it still works though, just a bit slow.
When i installed the ipod i just installed the software then plugged the ipod in and it all worked fine.

Well if you've selected manual update in itunes, then you should be able to drag the songs in "my library" in itunes onto the ipod icon in itunes, and it should copy them over. otherwise i think (this is pure theory) that you can move the files into a series of hidden folders on the ipod. the directory is "E:\iPod_Control\Music". There should be a multitude of hidden folders (F00, F01, F02 etc) in which your music is stored. I dont advise using this method cos i got nfi how the folder system actually works on the ipod.

Er... you've lost me

In iTunes, one of the settings is to enable the iPod as a disk drive. ALL this means, is that you will have an extra drive under 'My computer', onto which you can copy files. iTunes will still update the iPod automatically.. and you have nothing to worry about it.

If songs can't be found, remove them from your library as they're referencing bad locations.

But have a look around for that setting, it's only a checkbox or radio button or something, in the iPod settings.
