Is it OK to use a set text for Ext 1 as a piece of related material for Advanced? E.g. using LOTR for the Physical Journey. Does it show laziness or a lack of research in anyway...like as if you've just browsed the syllabus for last-minute ideas? Or is it valid?

It's not against the rules, but i wouldn't recommend using texts from any prescribed list as related material...
Besides LOTR is used so frequently...

I agree that it's not against any rules.

However I wouldn't 'not' advise it if you're able to do it well.

Our teacher "strongly" advised against it, when we asked if we could use texts from standard modules for aos related texts... even from the eng. ext syllabus (BNW/BR would have been great for speculative fiction). It's an unwritten rule that you find related texts from outside the syllabus.
