What is this course about that's different to specialising in a clinic after MD? Do you have to take it if you want to become a surgeon? When can you even register to take this course (After Undergrad Med Science? After MD?) [general confusion]

what do u mean by specialising in a "clinic" -- do you mean what is the difference between specialising as a junior/senior medical officer and doing this course?

I am sure this course is useful when becoming a surgeon -- I don't think it is essential. You can see the requirements for specific surgical pathways at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (https://www.surgeons.org/).

From the USYD website:

"
Admission to Doctor of Clinical Surgery requires:

  • a medical degree;
  • evidence of excellence in study in both their undergraduate and postgraduate career;
  • successful interview or examination; and
  • advance post graduate knowledge of anatomy, surgical pathology and applied physiology; or
    completion of the basic training requirements of the Australian College of Surgeons, or a Fellowship of the Australian College of Surgeons
