At its most rudimentary it f**ks them up. Radiowaves aren't very good at getting through areas full of charged/ionised particles and the kind of communications blackout you would get during magnetic storms or high sunspot activity make the van allen belts a bit of a no go zone for satellites (which are primarily used for communication).

they have similar concept... any movable particles are capable of blockin em waves...

in van allan belt, it's the particles trapped in the belt, in ionisation blackout, it's the ionised air particles around the space shuttle...

This dot point was removed from the syllabus after the 2002 HSC.
