It was secret. It's not a secret anymore. But it IS heavily guarded. This is more due to the historical significance of the extremely old and priceless documents and artefacts contained within rather than their controversial nature.

Only approved scholars and church officials are ever permitted entry, and never to simply browse at leisure.
