So I'm coming into my final term of year 11 pretty soon and am thinking about what I'm going to do for my major. I've got some ideas and all of them are making some sort of program. I know that I want to make it using visual basic however, the computers at my school don't have Visual Basic installed on them, does anyone know if there's a way I can install it on a hard drive or should I speak to our IT guy about getting it installed.

What are you planning on doing with visual basic on it? You'd need to be a very competent programmer (i.e. beyond the level of someone who would rely on visual basic) to make anything comparable to other programs used by students.
In terms of installation, that shouldn't be a barrier if you sort it out with your IT guy. Don't install it on your hard drive, that's a bit risky for quite a few complicated reasons (nope, nothing to do with the hard drive itself).
