Wernher Von Braun
Considered by many to be the most important man in the field of rocketry, Dr. Wernher von Braun served as Marshall Space Flight Center's first director from July 1, 1960 until January 27, 1970, when he was appointed NASA Deputy Associate Administrator for Planning. Following World War II(Braun worked through the spring and summer of 1932 to build a rocket in germany for military usage), Dr. von Braun and his German colleagues arrived in the United States to continue their rocket development work. In 1950, von Braun and his team were transferred from Ft. Bliss, Texas to Huntsville, Alabama to work for the Army's rocket program at Redstone Arsenal and later, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Under von Braun's leadership, Marshall developed the Saturn V launch vehicle which took Apollo astronauts to the moon.

von Braun intially worked for the German government, early on in his career he proved that Gyroscopes could be used to stabilise large rockets in flight. He was promoted to the head of the rocket development for the Nazi government and developed the infamous V2 rocket. As Germany's power waned, him and his fellow scientists fleed across war torn countries in order to find American troops to surrender to.
After the war he went to work on rockets that could enter space and was influential in the development of many rocket systems such as the Saturn V rocket which was used during the Apollo missions.
