HEy guys

ive just recently been handed a question on the big sleep.

' a good crime text will work on three levels - as a mystery or adventure - as a critique on society and as an examination on the central character.' the question asked was HOW SUCSSESFULLY DOES THE BIG SLEEP FILL THESE REQUIREMENTS?

now i understand firstly the aspect on which the Big Sleep is a critique on society

but also just want to noe if im on tha right track here when it comments on the central character being Marlowe...do i comment on how he is a man of morals etc or do i comment on how the movie is evolved around him? And lastly i do not understand how... well how to explain that it is a film of mystery...yes surley there is someone who is murdered and blackmailed etc but are those the possible aspects of the mystery?

i am very confused and would like to noe wat u think..... :)

Well in order to discuss part three, you'd be looking at how Hawkes uses the film and script to portray Marlowe a certain way for example:

*the way he can only call Vivienne pet names instead of her full name. This displays a slightly demeaning attitude toward her etc.

*his casual sex with the book keeper,[note that he tells her to take her glasses of first to please his vanity].

*his discomfited reaction in the Sternwood home, which show how uncomfortable he is with the notion of wealth.

There are heaps of little moments littered throughout the film that speak toward Marlowe's character - all you need do is look for them and discuss them in some depth and detail.

With the first part of the question the idea I'm getting is that you are meant to reveal how good crime texts use other genres[in this case mystery and adventure] and are in a sense hybrid texts[note:mystery is a *very* closely related genre to crime fic, but they are not the exact same thing]
