I come across this term occasionally in English, what does it mean?

Well they are the universal things that many of us will experience, have experienced or can understand.

Birth/Death, love, sorrow, joy, certain events, religion, naivety, friendships etc... you can make this stuff up to be honest. Just anything you believe most people will have experience in their life.

Try not to hate English so much. It's honestly the only subject in which you know exactly what you have to do (apart from the little specific differences in questions). Even maths can vary so much and not include certain topics. Lrn2luv English, it's an interesting subject.
