So right now I'm enrolled in B Sc (Adv) and I'm juggling between what I want my majors to be, I'm really set on going into postgrad Medicine at USyd so finding a job after I graduate from udergrad isnt a HUGE factor in choosing my majors but It still plays a fair role, I'm choosing between Neuroscience and Biochemistry or Mathematics and Physics, now I really do like Neuroscience I find the brain to be one of the most amazing things anywhere, but I love my maths and physics more, If I do go into neuroscience and biochem I'm set on going to summer school and/or overloading my semesters for maths and physics subjects. Basically I'm saying I do want to do the maths and physics at any cost however doing neuroscience and biochem only lets me do around a third of the subjects that I'm particularly interested in when I overload. The problem is that I am concerned about the job prospects after doing a physics/maths major in the chance that I don't get into med school. I do really like both sets of majors but maths and physics just a little more. what do you guys think i should get into?

(Please noone that says that first year is not what you expect and that you'll almost definitely find that what you do is not what you'll want to be doing next year, I am a second year university student and dead set on choosing between these 2 sets of majors and getting into med school)

It sounds like you really almost have made your mind up to do maths and physics - you're just worried about jobs. Would this be correct?

Wouldn't it be the same as the HSC? Do what you like doing, do what you're good at.

Better attitude = higher marks. Higher marks = better for both job prospects *and* med school. Oh, and steer away from overloading if at all possible, you'll be happier that way if nothing else.

Of course that's just my opinion.

(Edit: so wait, does either major affect your *prerequisites* for med school?)

It's not that I don't like neuroscience and biochemistry, I really do, It's like you said I'm worried about job prospects and I don't think that neither will really be affected by my "commitment" to the major. Neither affect my prerequisites so I guess my question is: Would you rather do a course that you'd really like to do with few job prospects in the case you don't get into med school or would you rather do a course that you still like though not as much albeit with higher job prospects once again in the case you don't get into med school.?

I can kinda see how neuroscience and biochemistry might have better "job prospects" than physics / maths, but if you're good (and it sounds like you might be!), you should be right at the top of what jobs are there in any case.

For myself, I'd do the course I wanted to do more, regardless of the job prospects - speaking as someone who wants very badly, atm, to do Philosophy. ><"

This is something you can really only answer yourself... I'll bow out now and let the science ppl take over (if any).

You do realise that to have any hopes of a job in biochem/neuroscience anyway that's you are going to have to do further study? Honors at the very least.

So the question really is, that if this is your backup for med, can you handle doing postgrad study for years in an area that you're not truly passionate about?

If I do major in neruo and biochem I have no problem doing an honors degree and if I'm fortunate enough to get accepted into - a Ph.D. program
