2844.00 + 2844.00 + 2912.00

= 8600.00 :(

Hmm... and that's just from UNSW... I've got another year from USYD...

$10632.00 for the first 2 years (4 semesters), according to the HECS debt letter thing I got from the ATO last week, plus around $2800ish this semester. So thats almost $13,000 for me for 5 semesters.

Just remember you have to take the HECS indexation into account (which is the interest on your debt) which is around 2.4% applied every financial year (so now).

I've never really looked at the schematics of how HECS is paid off, but isn't it just taken from your tax (once you reach your threshold)? So in that case, I've not much to worry about, since I would have to pay the tax anyway?

Like I said, I'm not too fluent in how HECS works.

No, it's not taken from your tax... it's taken from your income. :)

The compulsory repayments won't kick in until you start earning $25k+ or so.

(Or, if you've enrolled after the HECS reforms, when you earn $35k+.)

So it's actually taken from your income? Ohhhhhhhhhhhh..... great. Looks like my mum was wrong again. Thanks Lazarus.

yea its taken from ur income. Im getting taxed an extra 4% on my 35k income. That 4% going towards paying off my hecs debt.

Now since my mum has proven to be so unreliable, I shouldn't ask this.. but just incase she proves some credibility:

She claims that she's met certain circumstances where for example, people travel overseas for a year or so.. come back and their HECS are gone. Please tell me that's false.

That's one question I'll be very determined to ask her the first thing tomorrow.

I think thats wrong.. I mean if you leave the country after you graduate with a hecs debt you still have to pay it off
