i think its a metaphor
the use of " Road" & "Path" i geuss is a metaphor for "faith" & "fear" respectively.
correct me if im wrong, but Road implies open space (More faith,heads toward light)
Path is normally narrow, very little space (dark).
eg: Master Yoda:"...the path to the dark side..."
